31 days Hawke Challenge - Day 17

Day 17: Qunari - Opinions are like testicles. If you hit them hard enough it doesn’t matter how many you have.

What is your Hawkes opinion of the Arishok and the Qunari?: She does not like nor dislike Qunari. She is surprised some people believe she can understand the Qun or the Arishok - she can’t, but it is not because she didn’t try. Their philosophy of life is one that she can’t agree with, because it supposes a restriction on life for her, and she believes there are so many details she can’t comprehend because no one would try to explain them to her. Getting aside her personal ideas, she tries to get along as good as she can with their “neighbors”. At first it was only because she felt like defying Petrice for their unfortunate first encounter and “Ketojan“‘s mission. So she told the Arishok what happened to the karataam and the saarebas, and to her surprise, that is when he started to respect her. And then the viscount asked her to be a diplomat for the qunari, and even if she didn’t agree with the ways of the Qun, she started respecting and sympathizing them, even if that wasn’t her intention at the beginning. And actually she did a pretty good job as a diplomat - it was just that zealots and others kept ruining everything for her intents being a success.

Did your Hawke encourage Isabela to return the Qunari Relic? Why or why not? On Act II, the relationship between Isabela and Selene slowly started to go down. Not because of Isabela’s relic, which Selene didn’t give a damn about until she discovers what it is, but because of personal differences that became obvious in some point and deteriorated the relationship. Let’s say Selene thinks Isabela is a selfish, unreliable person when it takes to stand for someone’s side, and Isabela thinks Selene is a hypocrite. So, by the time Selene and Ursula discovered that the relic Isabela is searching for is the one that the Qunari had lost, the rogue lost what little patience she had after all the deal with Leandra, Saemus and Petrice, and she basically pushes Isabela to return the tome when she finds it. She believes it can make a huge difference to avoid a war in the city, and lose millions of lives - and not only that, that way she would feel like she didn’t lose three years doing what she did in vain. Besides that, the whole deal with Castillon is pretty irrelevant to her and dismisses her problem, telling her she has her priorities too, and those definitely stand for the city.

Of course, it doesn’t mind she tries to get some reason to Isabela’s head, because she escapes with the tome when she finds it. And Selene will never forgive her for that.

When confronting the Arishok, did your Hawke defend or hand over Isabela? To the Hawke’s surprise, Isabela did return with the tome of Koslun - to Selene’s knowledge, it was too late when she did, and a lot of damage had been done. Were it not for Ursula, Selene would have turned against Isabela in a blink. Just because she was spiteful of what she did at the beginning. Instead, she decides to not hand her over to the Qunari; she believes it can be another way of punishing her instead of the ways of the Qun. Even if she thought Isabela didn’t deserve it, she ended having the duel with the Arishok (because he believed it was Selene who was worthy to fight him, not anybody else), and he almost beat her to death if she didn’t have some tricks up her sleeve to win the battle. She couldn’t believe that was what happened, and after Meredith named her the Champion of the city, she passed out.

But can we seriously talk for 5 seconds about how Carver joining the Templars is essentially revenge porn for him?

And then he goes and joins the very organization that essentially goes unchecked in their ability to maim, torture and murder mages.

a) Templars don’t exist to hunt and kill mages. They exist to protect them. Whether they do or not is another story, but claiming that all Templars are evil butts that just exist to slaughter mages is just totally unfounded. There are bad eggs in every batch. Ever met a blood-mage? An abomination, perhaps? It goes both ways.

b) Carver thought his sibling was dead. No one expected Hawke to come back. You’re a Ferelden refugee in Kirkwall? Good luck finding work. He could do more for the smugglers or mercenaries and be stuck under their yoke forever, or he could maybe work for the guy who runs the bone pit and get killed in a rock slide. Or, you know, he could put his warrior’s skills to use in an organisation that exists to protect mages from themselves and earn a bit of coin for his broke-ass family.

c) When Carver talks about being held back, half the time it’s a resentment toward Hawke and how Hawke held him back. Sure, he mentions that Hawke’s a mage, but not once does he say you’d be better off in the Circle. Not once does he turn you over to the Templars. Not once does he turn your friends over to the Templars. Even when he IS ONE himself. His resentment centers around being a second child and having to take a back-seat to his siblings because their magic was dangerous. I don’t think Carver hates mages. I think he hates magic.

d) WE ONLY TALKED ABOUT THIS YESTERDAY? IN THE CARVER TAG? Read this and tell me you still feel the same oh man.

e) yes okay every character is open to interpretation but i think the moral of the story is don’t tag your hate especially when you’re not prepared to deal with rabid Carver fans okay thanks bye <3

I always feel the Templar path is better for Carver than the Warden one. Mainly because he gets to choose to be a Templar whereas his choice is really between death and the Wardens which isn’t /much of a choice. And Carver does not hate magic, how could he when Bethany was a mage too? He resents Hawke but not because they are a mage but because they are the irritating older sibling that everyone seems to love instantly and for whom everything goes always right. And templars do not exist to torture, mutilate and rape mages. Even under Meredith’s rule the templars were not actively harming the mages, instead they restricted the mages’ freedom any way they could - but not killing or torturing them. Mages are not especially loved and appreciated in Thedas but they are still people and as such, treated with some measure of respect. Taking into account Carver’s personal history (that at least two people in his family were mages, possibly his father too), there is no way he would be anything but a protector to mages.

Confession: When DA3 comes out, I’m planning on playing it with my saved file with my mage warden, mage Hawke, and then again as a mage so I can save the world three times as a mage. For the irony.

People should probably prepare for the likelihood that prior-game choices are going to be set via something other than save imports. Maybe something like they did for ME2 when it released on the PS3.

But, regardless, the new xbox has no backwards compatibility, and ps4’s is very limited (cloud streaming only.) The old save files from those games won’t be on that console, and won’t be compatible with the console’s hardware.

I have no doubt they will find some way to import choices (although likely not as immersive as just importing a file), but when I see people talk about this (or say they hope to see their old Warden or Hawke- which is like triple impossible since the game isn’t even on the same engine), I can’t help but think there will be a lot of disappointment

DA:I is going to be playable on the 360 and the PC and almost every platform DA2 could be played on, so those of us who are keeping our 360s will be able to import saves. :D

I am a major cynic,

The Frostbite engine is really different from the Eclipse/Lycium engine- actually having the new game understand the old saves and pull data from them would require some complex behind the scenes programming. It isn’t where the files are basically the same, like before.

So… while they could, for the people on pc/ps3/360, the question is, will Bioware and EA put in the effort for a feature the new console gen can’t take advantage of- essentially putting the old platforms up on the new gen? After the amount of time and money they put into developing for next gen (including pushing the release date back)… well, from a business-sense standpoint it would shock the hell out of me. (TBH, I would not be shocked in the least if they actually pushed the new over the old in their advertising campaigns. ”the definitive dragon age experience or whatever. They dumped a lot of R&D money into this game, as their first on the new gen. They want to get that investment back.)

But, like I said, I’m a cynic, and I work in the corporate world, so my heart has become cold and black as I see cost/benefit analysis in everything.

Even so, regardless of whether or not the game has room to reference the fact that mages keep saving the world, that doesn’t change the narrative this particular person is developing.

Didn’t Laidlaw or somebody on Twitter say the day they released the trailer at E3 that it’s also going to be available on current gen consoles and saves will carry over on all platforms or did I hallucinate that in my Morrigan fever

Laidlaw tweeted hours after they released the trailer that it would be released on PC/PS3/PS4/XBOX360/XBOXONE.

His tweet said something to the effect of “we’ve got you all covered.”

Day 6: Romance - Apostate prostitutes? Apostitutes!

Who did your Hawke Romance?: It was quite of a surprise to some that Faelan took interest in Fenris and started a romance with him. And even more surprising was that the elf took well the mage’s advances and even returning them, in time. Despite his natural hatred of magic and mages in general, it wasn’t so hard that he started falling for the youngest of the Hawke family, even if he was a mage himself. Faelan approached him carefully, without pressure nor taking for granted anything, just in spite of hoping the two of them could be friends. His intent was to understand him and his background better, and then the both of them discovered they had more in common than they believed. It was a bit harder for Fenris to swallow, but Faelan’s patience and kindness encouraged him to tolerate and even appreciate him. And even he found himself to stand for the younger one and caring for him.

After the Qunari attack happened and Selene rose up as the new Champion of the city, Faelan left the family estate to take provisional shelter on Fenris’. At least that’s what he thought it would be in the beginning, but time proved the estate would become his permanent home and haven. That provided they could bond further, Faelan taking the effort to clean out the estate and making it more like a home, and even teaching Fenris how to read and write. Their friendship soon evolved into something else, much stronger, and despise their own personal problems and their differences, they managed to keep a healthy relationship and provide for the other’s needs. And, even more than that, Fenris’ view about mages got changed a little because of the little Hawke’s influence.

What are their plans for the future?: Faelan’s resolution is to stay at Fenris’ side forever, getting some independence from his own family in the process without cutting the contact for good. So they did. With the circumstances being what they are at the end, Faelan worries about him being caught again by the Chantry or Fenris’ past as a slave comes again haunting them even after defeating Danarius, but they make the resolution to look after each other to not let that happen, laying a low profile about themselves and leading a humble life, as normal as they can.

31 Days Hawke Challenge - Day 16

Day 16: All That Remains - Now… I’m free.

How did Hawke react to the death of Leandra?: It has been stated before that Leandra is like a second mother for Selene, and has straightened bonds with her even more when she and her father went to live in the estate. So, naturally, her aunt’s death is a hard blow, even without considering the awful circumstances in which had happened. She feels in part guilty because she let go Dupuis believing he had nothing to do with the killer, and it’s hard to swallow she and Ursula arrived too late to help. Of course, they could liberate Leandra’s soul from Quentin, and they could kill him in the most merciless way, but that was all they could do for her. She spends some nights after that sleeping badly and having nightmares about the horrid images they encounter. And the worst part of all is that neither of them are allowed to mourn her properly, because after that, the situation in the city goes worse and worse until the Qunari decide to attack.

Her temper grows considerably bitterer after that, and starts to tolerate some things less and less. She (and Ursula) blames Aveline for not taking Emeric’s investigations seriously, her relationship with Isabela goes worse, and she even start having problems with her own brother, recently escaped from the Gallows and living with them when Leandra’s death took place. And it’s all downhill from there, until the conclusion of Arc III.

Did they take comfort in a close friend or romantic interest?: Everyone give their condolences to the Hawkes, but the person in which Selene took confort the most was Ursula, obviously. She had lost her mother, and they mostly only had each other to hold upon the grieving properly. Selene made the most of her efforts to retain something of the humor she previously had just to make her cousin smile and feel better, but both of them know this event have changed and hardened her, and it wasn’t always for the best. But if they were close to each other before, then the bond between them was unbreakable. In many ways.

Other people did their best to confort them, like Varric or Merrill, and they did a good job in that. But family matters stayed better in family, no matter how good opinion Selene had of her friends or (on that moment) her beloved one.

I sometimes think my confession would be:

“I find an odd characteristic of any fandom (whether it be games or TV shows or what have you) to be the belief that the only worthwhile relationship between any two characters is romance. Two characters can’t have a deep friendship without it secretly being romantic. Two characters can’t hate each other without harboring lust. A follower that you have a great relationship with is disappointing if it also can’t lead to love.

Is romance great? Yes. Are people who like romance awesome? Why not. I just don’t get why everything has to lead to romance. It’s almost as if we couldn’t reveal a mailbox these days without someone demanding to know if they can have a romance with it.

You know? I find great that you can’t romance Varric or Aveline in DA2. I love to build friendships or rivalries with them all, outside of romances. Besides, those two, I wouldn’t romance them even if they were romanceable, I’m sure.

Day 5: Sexual Orientation - What makes that kitten purr?

What is your Hawke’s sexual orientation?: Faelan is gay. He learns slowly to be comfortable with his own sexuality though; he is very young and he is still evaluating and discovering himself, though it seems there is no doubt about the nature of it: he is attracted exclusively to men (he has tried the other way around, but it didn’t work for him. Rather than that he failed spectacularly). On terms of Kinsey scale, he would be a rotund 6.

How do they feel about the topic of sex?: He knows it’s something as natural as breathing and something he shouldn’t be ashamed of, but in fact he is really shy and closed about the topic. It doesn’t surprise anyone, because he is naturally reserved per se, and having lived on the Kirkwall Circle and considering how much repressed are they about practically everything, he had to take all the feelings and emotions he has about sex life to himself, not sharing them with practically anyone (the few times he tried to do so, it ended quite badly for one of the parts involved). Which are a lot, considering he lives there in a period of his life when hormones hit the worse. It supposed for him something as much harrowing than the Harrowing itself, basically. And when he is outside at last, it is somehow an issue as well, at least at the beginning.

What are some of your Hawke’s sexual experiences?: Before escaping the Gallows and meeting Fenris, the few experiences he had with sex hasn’t been what one would call great, exactly. In fact, some of them has ended in tragedy. Basically he had to resort to keep it to himself, fondling himself at night when no one would be paying attention. He tried to start an affair with another mage whom he shared his quarters, an apprentice, only to had him become Tranquil shortly after that. They didn’t went far either, so by the time he escapes the Gallows he is still a very unexperienced boy. He wouldn’t dare to start anything else after that incident, as afraid and scarred that left him, for a long time, focusing on his studies instead.

Carver is just 19 after the Hawkes’ first year in Kirkwall. This is prime whining/angsting age

He just left his home, everything he knows, and apparently some girl who gives him blow jobs behind Barlin’s barn

You mostly have to pay for blow jobs in Kirkwall

He just lost his twin sister

In act I, he lives in a shitty house with old cheese in it

Also there are only three bunks in Gamlen’s house, so Carver is possibly stuck spooning his brother/sister every night

Disclaimer: You know already, if you’re following this, I’m not following game canon exactly. So there. Derp. x3

Day 15: Elves/Alienage - It’s elf this or it’s elf that, guess what, I’ll elf your mother!

How do they feel about Elves?: Selene and Faelan have both elven blood, because of their mother (~~I would say they’re half-elves, but canon lore insist in the idea half-elves doesn’t exist… meh~~). In Selene is less noticeable than on her brother, but still, that makes her somehow more sympathetic about elves and their situation. Even so, it doesn’t seem fair to her that they’re not treated as equals as they’re not as different from everyone else, leaving aside their looks. Every time a chance is presented to side with elves, she takes it. She feels they deserve the right to be as recognized as much as humans, but also, because she knows that would be problematic to some elves, doesn’t press the subject much either. She is just another human for them after all, even if she is someone who tries to make a difference to not making relationship between them so difficult as it is.

She has taken a lot of criticism about the subject. Has been called an elf-fancier and claimed to used elves as much as everyone else would for some. Even if it’s true most of her lovers have been elves, that doesn’t change anything for her. And of course, she has Orana serving in her house, but she is treated with more kindness and equality than most elven servants on Hightown mansions, and she is as appreciated as Bodahn or Sandal could be.

How do they feel about the treatment of Elves in The Alienage?:The very existence of an alienage to keep elves apart from humans nauseates her. And let’s not talk about its miserable conditions either. She didn’t had much better than them for most of their life, so she can sympathize with that in much of a sense. Would it be for her, she would eliminate the alienages and the stigma they have, but she is also reminded that some elves chose to live in alienages as well, even if their conditions are deplorable, and they are somehow happy with that choice. Even so, alienages are symbols of oppression to her, as much as the templar order could mean to someone like Anders, for example, and she would preferred they lived as they wished, with better opportunities.

What is their reaction to the Elven/Human slave trade still occuring?: I’ve already talked a little of what does slavery mean to Selene. She has seen her mother offering herself as a slave to protect her children from suffering the same fate. She then became the head of her family, as her father became apathetic from the loss of her for a very long time and forgot to act as a father until Faelan showed signs of magic. As a result, is very resented against slavers, and it doesn’t matter to her it could be “another job” for some people, that they wouldn’t take that as something personal. It’s still a choice they can take. It outrages her so much that she is automatically aggressive whenever the topic comes by and doesn’t take any shit towards it. She just won’t tolerate something like that and doesn’t feel anything in the world could justify a practice like that.

What is their relationship like with the Dalish?: Respectful, but distant. She feels it can’t be any other way. She has supported them as much as she could (taking as a special note fighting some templars alongside them when they came to look for Feynriel) and she is very curious of their ways, but understands it is a very dangerous ground to set foot into and she treads it very carefully, with all the respect they deserve, which she feels it’s a lot. Thanks to Merrill, anyway, she comes to understand them better, and she somehow sympathizes with them and Merrill’s sentiment of wanting to help her clan. Thus, she has been an intermediator and peacemaker of sorts between Merrill and the Sabrae clan until the very end, in which they had to leave their camp forever when the incident with Marethari and the demon happened so anybody wouldn’t get hurt.
